Emergency Preparedness
No matter how cautious and safe a driver you are, you may still be involved in an accident or another roadside emergency. Your car could have a sudden maintenance issue, and of course, there is no way to prevent other drivers from behaving irresponsibly on the road. Weather and road conditions can also cause problems, even for the best drivers. Anyone operating a motor vehicle must know and accept that there is some inherent risk in the activity of driving. The best course of action may be to try to be prepared for common emergencies.
Roadside Emergency Kits
One aspect of being prepared for an emergency is putting together a roadside emergency kit. These are sold as bundled packages at many retailers, but you may be able to put together something that fits your specific needs better. If you would like to put together your own, consider including the following:
- Common car maintenance tools, such as jumper cables and simple tools. You may consider keeping some oil or other car product if your car frequently has need of it.
- First aid supplies – for this item, a pre-packaged kit may be more compact and efficient, but you may also want to include any supplies specific to any of your medical needs.
- Survival supplies, such as protein bars, water, a flashlight, and flares.
- Weather-specific supplies, such as gloves, ponchos, and blankets.
Think about the geography of your area, common weather problems, and frequent car problems people encounter as you plan your kit.
