Fingernail Infections
Millions of Americans visit nail salons across the country on a daily basis. They may go to nail salons operated out of strip centers, other small retail outlets, or expensive spas. Men and women both enjoy a trip to the nail salon, and the benefits can go beyond just having well maintained nails. Unfortunately, nail infections and nail fungus are hazards that people risk every time they go to the salon.
Nail fungus is spread mainly in salons that do not sterilize their instruments and tools properly after every client. One California nail salon was spreading nail fungus from foot to foot by not cleaning the filters on their spa chairs. Bacteria were growing in the filters and just behind the filters in a great enough quantity that 110 of the salon’s clients were infected with a fungal infection.
Treating a nail infection can be tricky. There are a number of topical treatments available. The problem is that these do little to treat the actual infection. They provide relief from pain and may make the nail look a little better but they, for the most part, do not kill off the bacteria to a degree that the nail can be considered healed.
Another option is to go to a doctor and receive a prescription for an antibiotic of some sort. This works as well but, as with all medicines, can have other negative repercussions. The most successful cases treat the nail infection from the inside with an antibiotic and from the outside with a topical treatment.
