Hair Salon Dangers
Although a haircut seems like a harmless procedure, there are dangers lurking. Most hairstylists take great care to sterilize their salons. However, if they don’t, you can contract some very nasty infections.
The main culprit of infections in hair salons is Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This staph infection resists antibiotics and thus is very difficult to treat. The infection can start at the hair follicle and eventually spread and become quite serious. Additionally, fungal infections like ringworm and lice can be contracted in hair salons.
All haircutting instruments should be sterilized between customers. This includes combs, brushes, scissors, and razors. The sterilization fluid should be fresh, and the container should only contain a couple of instruments at a time.
A good way to tell if a hair salon is practicing proper sanitary procedures is to inspect the cleanliness of the facility. Is there dirt and debris on the floors, or are they freshly swept? How clean are the restrooms?
Not all hair salons have proper ventilation. This results in pungent smells from chemical fumes. When these fumes are combined with the heat created by hair dryers, curlers, and strengtheners, clients may be left with a headache. In addition, the fumes might worsen allergies or asthma.
