Hanukkah Safety
As winter approaches, many Chicago families are preparing for their Hanukkah celebrations. In the business and excitement of this season, safety sometimes gets overlooked. Minor mistakes can lead to serious injury and property damage, so keep these safety tips in mind.
Keep the menorah in a clear space. Hanging curtains, pictures, or nearby clutter can catch fire and quickly bring the festivities to an end.
Do not leave a lit menorah unattended. This is especially true if there are small children or pets in the house who might knock it over.
If you’ll be making latkes, be very careful with the hot oil. People should not be in the kitchen unless they are cooking, and small children should be kept out of that room entirely.
Have a fire escape plan, just in case. Make sure all of your guests are familiar with it, especially if they will be staying overnight.
If you plan on decorating with electric lights, check to make sure they are in good condition – no frayed wires or cracks. Never overload an outlet or connect two extension cords.
Prepare a safety kit if you do not already have one, and make sure you know how to use it. Minor cuts and burns are common at any kind of celebration. You’ll naturally want to be able to treat them quickly and effectively.
