Kitchen Safety
It is easy to become distracted while cooking if you have recipes to read and may be worrying about the final outcome of your efforts. You may be entertaining, in which case you are likely trying to hold a conversation or keep children away from the stove while keeping an eye on various simmering pots and pans. Unfortunately, the consequences for taking your mind off kitchen safety can be severe.
Whenever you are preparing a meal, whether alone or in a house full of people, please keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Keep your floor clear and dry. You will probably be walking around the room quite a lot while preparing a meal: anything on the floor, such as boxes or stools, can lead to falls and serious injuries. After you mop the floor, be sure it is completely dry before beginning to cook.
- Never leave glass containers on kitchen burners. When counter space is limited, people often serve food right on their stovetops. Even if the burners are not currently on, if they are still hot from earlier use, they can cause class containers to heat and even explode.
- If you drop a knife, let it fall. Many people experience a knee-jerk impulse to catch the knife before it hits the ground. This can have painful consequences.
- Keep an eye on anything cooking, especially if it contains fat or oil. Many kitchen fires have been sparked by neglected pots containing these substances. Fat can move from smoking to burning very quickly, and the resulting fire is self-fueling, making it very strong.
