Nail Salon Dangers

Many women look forward to the luxury of a manicure. What they don’t expect is an infection. While most nail salons go to great lengths to keep their services sanitary, unfortunately, that is not always the case. Wicked germs can easily be spread to clients through unwashed instruments and manicurist’s hands. This can result in a client leaving with bacterial, yeast, fungal, or viral infections in addition to their polished nails. This includes hepatitis C, warts, and staph infections. We have provided the following advice to help reduce your chances of picking up an unwanted infection.

Never allow the nail technician to cut your skin with either cuticle clipper of a Credo blade. These instruments are illegal in certain states. However, there are some states that allow salons to use them in order to remove callused skin.

All instruments should be cleaned and disinfected. In the industry, the best method is heat sterilization or autoclaving. However, chemical sterilizing is also permitted provided that the instruments are submerged in the chemicals for ten minutes between clients. Inquire as to what the salon’s sterilization methods are. If they use chemicals, look to see that the label on the bottle says germicidal. Beware of salons using cheaper glass cleaner.

Do not shave or wax within a day of going to the salon to get a pedicure. Freshly shaved legs provide an easy access point for germs.
