Preventing Elevator Injuries
Elevators have been around for decades, and nearly everyone that has used an elevator has come out injury free. However, injuries from elevator accidents do occur. If you do not act cautiously when riding in elevators, you could increase your chances of being injured. The following tips will help you to remain safe when riding in an elevator:
- Stand clear of the elevator door when it is closing. The sensors that cause elevator doors to retract do not always work. If the door is closing, the sensors are supposed to cause the door to open if it detects something in the path of the door. This does not always happen and can cause injury if the door closes on a person standing in its way.
- Beware of elevators that are not flush with the floor. Sometimes the elevator compartment will not stop so that its floor is flush with the floor you are entering from. This can cause the person entering to trip and fall.
- Be especially cautious when the door opens to an open elevator shaft. If you ever see an elevator door open and there’s no elevator compartment, but rather just an open elevator shaft, you should avoid the elevator altogether. Instead, you should immediately contact the building owner or maintenance company to get the elevator repaired as quickly possible. This situation can cause serious injury or death if someone falls into the shaft.
