Sharing the Road with Trucks
Every year over 100,000 people are injured in collisions between commercial trucks and smaller cars. An additional 5,000 people lose their lives in these accidents. These accidents are almost always preventable, if everyone would observe basic safety rules while on the road. Below is some important information about sharing the road with trucks.
Be aware of no-zones, also known as the truck driver’s blind spots. If you are near the front, back, or side of a large truck, the driver may not be able to see you. The general rule of thumb is that if you can see the driver in his or her side mirror, he or she can see you.
If you are behind a truck on an upward incline, be sure to keep a large amount of space between it and your car. Trucks stopped on an incline may roll backwards when the drivers take their feet of the brakes.
If a truck is changing lanes near you, give it plenty of space. Some people try to speed up when a truck moves into their lane, hoping to pass it. However, the truck driver likely cannot see you at this time, making the situation very dangerous.
If you need to pass in front of a truck, be very attentive to your surroundings. Make sure you are far ahead of the truck, and do not forget to use your turn signal. Large trucks can create gusts of wind as they move down the road, so be prepared for the affect this can gave on your vehicle, especially if it is small. Keep both hands on the steering wheel.
