Spa Dangers
People choose to go to a spa to relax and to give their skin and muscles some extra attention. What they don’t expect is to incur injury or illness from these “healthy” places. It may be hard to believe, but spas are actually full of potential health and safety hazards. Some of these include:
- Rough handling by a masseuse / masseur: Instead of being therapeutic, a too-intense massage can lead to injury and bruising.
- Heat Illness: hot tubs or saunas are sometimes kept at temperatures higher than what is considered healthy and recommended. This can cause heat stroke, or even scalding.
- Infection: bacteria and other organisms flourish in warm, moist environments. Spas must be very careful to eliminated bacteria from all tubs and tools, or their clients are at risk of infection. In fact, many of the exfoliating and softening procedures actually facilitate absorption of organisms through the skin.
- Chemical burns: In order to prevent bacterial growth, spas often use chlorine and other harsh chemicals in tubs and on tools. Sometimes the chemical levels are so high that they can cause chemical burns.
No matter how safe and beneficial a spa may seem, if its management fails to adhere to high safety standards, they put all of the spa’s clients in danger.
