Car Safety Tips for Children
Attitudes towards car safety have changed dramatically over the generations. Seat belts were once considered mild annoyances, rather than vital safety equipment. Attitudes towards speeding, driving while intoxicated, and other dangerous practices were once surprisingly relaxed, whereas today they are considered serious crimes.
Because of this rapid change in attitude, people who care for young children are not always up to date on the latest information about car safety. Please observe the following safety tips while driving with small children in the car.
- Never leave children in a parked car, even for a short period of time. If you do not usually drive with children, you may need to give yourself a reminder that they are in the car, especially if they fall asleep.
- Car seats come in a variety of styles, from infant seats for small babies, to convertible safety seats for toddlers, to booster seats for small children. Speak with your pediatrician or a store employee to make sure you are using the correct size and type of seat.
- Keep a safety kit in your car for emergencies. Good things to include are flashlights, blankets, water, and first aid supplies.
- Do not let children under twelve years of age sit in front seats with air bags. They can be seriously injured if the air bags deploy.
If Your Child has been Injured
Sometimes children are injured despite every safety precaution that you as a parent can take. If your child has been injured by a reckless driver, negligent safety equipment manufacturer, or another careless party, you may have grounds for a personal injury lawsuit.
