Thanksgiving Safety
Thanksgiving can be one of the most pleasant holidays of the year, as we gather with loved ones to enjoy delicious food. Unfortunately, for some families every year, this delightful day is interrupted by injury, pain, and sometimes tragedy. To keep yourself and your family safe, observe the following safety tips at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner:
- When you’re in a busy kitchen with many dishes going, it can become difficult to keep track of which is which. To be on the safe side, treat every dish as if it were burning hot. Use potholders every time you pick up a dish.
- Although candles create a lovely atmosphere, you may want to rethink them if your dinner will be attended by a large number of children or pets. In any case, never leave lit candles unattended.
- If anyone suffers a burn, run it under cold water, then clean it with a clean bandage. If the burn becomes worse or starts to blister, contact 9-1-1.
- Do not try to put out a grease fire with water. If the fire is small enough, cover it with a pan lid. You can also try to smother it with baking soda, but remember to use a great deal of it.
- Choking is one of the biggest risks at large meals. If your dinner is attended by children, make sure to cut their food into small, chewable bites for them. To reduce the risk of choking, everyone should avoid talking or laughing with their mouths full and take manageable bites.
