Travel Safety Tips
Whether we are travelling for business, enjoying a vacation, or visiting friends and family, nearly all of us will stay in a hotel at one point in our lives. This can be an enjoyable experience if the hotel is comfortable and well run. Sadly, it can also be a frightening or tragic experience due to negligent hotel owners, thieves, and other criminals.
To maximize your safety while staying in a hotel, take the following safety tips:
- Be sure to keep track of your luggage and other valuables while checking into the hotel, especially if the lobby is crowded. Thieves will take advantage of the many distractions involved in filling out paperwork in a crowded space.
- Instruct the employees at the front desk to not give out your name or room number, and to contact you if anyone comes looking for you.
- At check-in, get business cards or matchbooks with the hotel’s address on them. Keep one on the hotel room desk for easy reference, and keep the other in your wallet or purse throughout your trip. This can be very helpful if you get lost, or need to contact delivery or emergency services from your hotel room.
- Try to avoid staying in ground-level hotel rooms that have windows or doors opening to the outside. This can be unsafe.
- Your hotel room should have a fire escape plan posted within it. If so, make sure you are familiar with this plan. If there is not one, call the front desk to enquire about the hotel’s fire plans.
