Since the world was concerned that windshield wipers would distract drivers and cause accidents with their hypnotizing effect, drivers have been given a few hundred new distractions. The latest, and most dangerous, is texting while driving.
Last year in New York, 5 teenagers were kiled when a driver was texting and driving at the same time. The Chicago city council plans to take aim at the issue and ban texting while driving. This is seen as something to do to combat the epidemic of driving and texting.
Law enforcement personnel and operators of emergency vehicles would be exempt from the law. All other drivers will be prohibited from texting and surfing in their car except when the car is in a "stationary, parked position, and not in gear." Violators would face a fine of $75 for each offense and $200 if the texting involves a crash.
