University of Illinois Chicago Researcher Killed

by Administrator 19. December 2008 10:12

A traffic accident occurred this past Thursday that took the life of a Japanese researcher temporarily working at the University of Illinois Chicago in the cardiology department.

36-year-old Dr. Yuichi Ohki was killed near campus this week when he was struck by an oncoming semitrailer truck.

According to police reports, Dr. Ohki was leaving the school and was only a few blocks away from the lab where he worked when, at approximately 8:45 p.m., he walked into the back portion of a trailer and was struck by the back wheels.

Medical reports state that Dr. Ohki died from multiple injuries suffered during the accident.  As of right now, no citations have been issued against the truck driver for Dr. Ohki's death.  Police and colleagues suspect that Ohki's accident may have resulted from his lack of familiarity with Chicago's streets and / or with dangerous icy road conditions.

Madison County Sees rise in Asbesto Cases

by Administrator 18. December 2008 13:40

Madison County, Illinois has seen a rise in asbestos cases over the last two years after declining from 2003 to 2006.  Part of the rise has been attributed to cases from outside of Madison County coming to Madison County, which has a large blue collar workforce that make up juries favorable to plaintiffs in the face of corporate defendents.  Additionally, the rise in asbestos cases is expected to continue to rise, as it has over the country.

Although steps have been taken to curb the number of asbestos cases, the numbers still increase.   As a result, new law firms haw spawned just to take advantage of the expected new asbestos cases.  Although a host of factors have contributed to the rise of asbestos cases in Madison County, plaintiffs still have favorable circumstances.

Supreme Court Permits Suits against Tobacco Companies Misleading Advertising

by Administrator 16. December 2008 11:05

On December 14, 2008. the United States Supreme Court ruled that lawsuits against tobacco companies for misleading advertising in relation to light cigarettes are constitutional.  Specifically, the Supreme Court ruled that a state's laws can be used in fighting a tobacco company's claims of lights cigarettes.  The tobacco company defendents were arguing that because federal law prohibits states from regulating aspects of cigarette advertising relating to smoking or health, the claims of the plaintiffs were not allowable.  The majority Supreme Court opinion, however, was that the federal law did not apply when cigarette companies misrepresented their products.

The lawsuit against the tobacco companies was a class action lawsuit.  Three residents from the state of Maine had filed the suit against Altria Group and its Marlboro subsidiary, claiming that the company knew for a very long time that people who smoke light cigarettes take longer puffs.

Cigarettes are a major health risk, and tobacco companies have to make sure that peopel know that and that they do not intentionally mislead the tobacco companies.  For more information, contact the Chicago personal attorney lawyers of Friedman & Bonebrake at 312-466-8200 or by sending them a message from here
