Man killed in 4-car accident

by Administrator 5. October 2010 15:03

Earlier Saturday morning, a four-vehicle car accident occurred in Coles County resulting in the wrongful death of 28-year old Martinez Jones.

Illinois State Police reported that the accident happened when 28-year old Michelle Schroeder was traveling southbound on Interstate 57 and swerved to avoid an animal in the road.  Schroeder crossed over the median after swerving and into the northbound lanes of I 57 where she hit Jones' vehicle.  A tractor-trailer traveling northbound tried to avoid Jones' vehicle but hit the rear driver's side of the vehicle causing Jones to be thrown out of his car and into the freeway.

Another tractor-trailer had no time to avoid Jones after the second collision and hit him while he lay in the road.  Records show that Jones was wearing a seatbelt.  No other drivers or passengers were injured in the accident.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jones' family and friends.

Man dies in crash on I-80

by Administrator 13. September 2010 13:00

Sunday afternoon, a man was killed in a three-car accident on Interstate-80 near south Mokena.  Witnesses say the accident occurred when a black pickup truck swerved and rear-ended a green car.  The truck then proceeded to jump over a three-foot tall divider and hit another pickup truck head-on in oncoming westbound traffic.

The green car that was rear-ended burst into flames after the collision.  Two witnesses tried to open the car's doors and help the driver out but it was too late.  Officials declared the driver dead at the scene of the accident.

Fire and emergency officials treated two people for minor injuries at the scene of the accident and three others refused treatment.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the man lost in this tragic car accident.

Lincoln Park man injures several while fleeing cops

by Administrator 17. August 2010 10:24

A Lincoln Park man went on a wild spree throughout Chicago on Sunday beginning around 1 PM when the 41-year old ran a red light at LaSalle and Ontario and hit a vehicle.  Anthony McCoy then fled the scene of the accident where the hit vehicle's occupants were injured.  He then proceeded to hit another vehicle at Grand Ave. and Halsted St., also injuring the vehicle's occupants.

McCoy fled the scene of the second accident as well, but stopped near 900 W. Grand Ave. because of damage to his vehicle.  He then began to attempt to enter passing vehicles.  After several failed attempts, a Near North District police officer got a hold of him and tried to arrest him.  McCoy was able to break free and jump into the officer's SUV.  While driving off in the SUV, McCoy struck the officer who tried to arrest him, as well as another officer who had come to aid him.  Soon after, McCoy crashed into a fire hydrant and the officers were able to arrest him.

McCoy faces several charges including leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, reckless driving, and driving uninsured.

Dangerous railroad intersection to be fixed

by Administrator 10. August 2010 09:44

Rail safety officials for the Illinois Commerce Commission have stated that they are encouraging the city to rebuild the dangerous railroad intersection at the Nagle Avenue crossing between Avondale Ave. and Northwest Highway.  The intersection is notorious for vehicles stopping on the track and train-vehicle accidents.

ICC officials worry that the improvements needed are too costly.  ICC rail safety program administrator Michael Stead stated that building a bridge was their preferred option.  Their second option would be to install new electronic circuitry to improve the timing of the railroad crossing gates.

Instead, the changes to the intersection include new signs, pavement markings, and new concrete crossing panels.  Construction will take place from August 23rd to September 3rd.  The intersection will be closed during this time.
