Chicago's red-light cameras don't always deter accidents

by Administrator 3. December 2009 11:27

In 2008, after red-light cameras were installed at Western Avenue, the number off accidents went up to 42 compared to 28 in 2006.

Cameras were added to reduce accidents, but the Illinios Department of Transportation said accidents have increased at many of the intersections the red-light cameras were installed according to  collision records. Although some intersections have improved due to the cameras, 60 percent have not.

Critics say that the threat of a $100 fine when running a red-light have caused people to slam on their breaks to avoid it which leads to more accidents.

City officials say that crashed are only one way to measure the effectiveness of the cameras. After an initial increase in violatios when cameras were first installed, the number of violations has decreased 60 percent.

Driving into the Sun

by Administrator 28. May 2009 15:48

A lot of time and attention is rightly directed toward the concerns of certain driving conditions that are inherently risky. Late-night, highway, poor weather, ice on the road - all of these circumstances present a unique set of dangers of which all drivers should be aware.

However, one hazard that is often overlooked in these discussion has to do with the problems of late-afternoon driving in the direction on the sun. The glare produced when the sun is setting on the horizon can be blinding, even when wearing glasses. This can be especially dangerous and problematic when the sun is behind a stoplight or reflecting brightly off a highway.

Sun-related accidents are most likely at sunrise and sunset, which is unfortunately when millions of daily commuters are on the road. Unfortunately, while accidents caused by sun glare can often be deadly, very little statistical information exists on the subject, making the problem hard to combat.

The problem is not simply limited to vehicle collisions. Dozens of stories have been reported in which a blinded motorist has stuck and killed a pedestrian.

Polarized sun glasses have been known to help drastically reduce the effects of glare. However, sometimes the sunlight is simply too bright and unexpected to combat, and even pulling over can be difficult at high speeds.

Cell Phones and Car Wrecks

by Administrator 24. April 2009 09:29
Cell Phones and Car Wrecks

For many Americans today, the idea of not talking on their cell phone while driving seems unimaginable. The development of car speaker-phones and wireless headsets in particular has made coordinating family plans and conducting major business from behind the wheel the norm. Even those motorists who still use a handset seem to have mastered a new method of driving at high speeds with one hand, or employing the classic phone-against-the-shoulder technique.

Although such behavior may be becoming more and more socially acceptable, especially with the sinister “texting-while-driving” problem beginning to overshadow oral conversation in terms of perceived danger, the threat to public safety that researches and lawmakers alike have associated with cell phone use remains. In fact, a recent study concluded that a 20-year-old talking on a cell phone slowed his or her driving reaction times to those of a person fifty years his or her senior.

The important thing to remember in light of new technologies is that even if you can find a phone number, call, and hold a conversation all without taking your eyes off the road, your attention is nevertheless divided. There is a limit to how much information a human mind can process at once, and when your conversation becomes more important than paying attention to your surroundings, you are posing a major risk to your own life and that of those around you.
