Two UIC students attacked on campus

by Administrator 30. August 2010 16:54

The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Saturday that two University of Illinois at Chicago students had been injured in two separate attacks over the previous three days.

The first incident occurred around 3:20 in the afternoon this past Thursday, August 26th, when two thirteen to fifteen year old boys ran up to a UIC student at the 1200 block of South Blue Island Avenue and pushed him down onto the ground.  The suspects punched and kicked the student in the face as they took a cell phone and cash from his pant pockets.  The victim reported the incident and fire department officials arrived and treated him for cuts and bruises to his face.

The second incident occurred early Saturday morning around 2:15 AM.  The attacked happened in the center of campus on Roosevelt Road when a 22-year old UIC student was approached by a stranger and punched in the face.  The attacker arrived and fled in a dark blue four-door vehicle.  The victim was taken to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago suffering from a broken jaw.

Man dies in boating accident on Cal-Sag

by Administrator 22. June 2010 14:09

An Orland Park fisherman died in a tragic boating accident that occurred just after midnight on Sunday on the Cal-Sag Channel.

The accident occurred when a man and woman driving another boat swerved to avoid a log and rear-ended the fisherman's boat, throwing him off it and into the channel near the Ashland Avenue bridge.  Coast Guard officials stated that the fisherman could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket.  Futhermore, state officials believe at least one of the boats was undergoing maintenance at the time of the collision.

The victim was identified by officials of the Cook County medical examiner's office as 41-year old Bishr Swaiss.  The Department of Natural Resources is investigating the accident to determine if any boaters should be held responsible.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Swaiss' family and friends.

New procedure found to prevent brain injury in babies

by Administrator 11. June 2010 16:49

Babies most often suffer from brain damage when born with a lack of oxygen.  Brain damage can be life-long and sometimes even fatal.

Recently, a new study using cooling blankets placed over the heads of babies who were born with insufficient oxygen proved successful.  The study used simple blankets with tubes of cold water running through it and reduced the babies' temperatures to 91 degrees over a 72 hour time period.  In doing so, the babies' body systems slowed, requiring less energy, and reducing swelling in their brains.  Furthermore, doctors concluded that the blanket can prevent lasting brain damage, and reduce the risk of seizures, cerebral palsy, and death.

This procedure would be the first form of therapy for brain damage in babies.  Currently, it is only used in academic medical facilities.

by Administrator 18. May 2010 12:26

Three people, including a young girl, were injured in a five-vehicle accident in Chicago's Park Ridge neighborhood Thursday.

According to the accident report released by the Chicago Police Department, a 17 year-old girl from Park Ridge was exiting a McDonald's parking lot on Northwest Highway shortly after 7:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. Police say the teenager's 200 Pontiac Sunfire struck a 1994 Volvo which was traveling northwest on Northwest Highway. The Pontiac then struck two additional vehicles before colliding with a parked car.

The 17 year-old was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital following the crash. A 49 year-old man from Park Ridge and his 11 year-old passenger, believed to be his daughter, were also taken to Advocate Lutheran. The child sustained internal injuries and neck trauma in the crash. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the Volvo, 46 year-old Federico Balza, was arrested for driving without a license or insurance.

The 17 year-old girl was not ticketed, police say.
