Almost 80 percent of pedestrian accidents that occurred in Chicago in these years happened when people were legally using a crosswalk. In addition, the study found that the majority of pedestrian accidents involved cars that were making a turn.
From 2005 to 2009, there were 17,487 pedestrian accidents in Chicago involving 18,377 pedestrians. 16 percent of these pedestrian accidents were fatal or caused serious injury.
About 33 percent of pedestrian accidents are hit-and-run accidents. Furthermore, around 30 percent of the pedestrians in pedestrian accidents in Chicago from 2005 to 2009 were teenagers.
