Economic troubles increase stress and injuries in the workplace

Recent data from a survey of American workers reveals that many workers feel that the economic recession and current economic troubles have led to an increase in stress in the workplace.  Furthermore, research shows that stress in the workplace increases distraction in the workplace, workplace accidents and injuries, and sick leave taken by employees.

According the survey, 62 percent of working Americans have experienced "worker intensification."  This occurs when an employer tries to accomplish more with fewer resources.

A majority of working Americans say they have taken on additional responsibilities at their job since the recession and 70 percent say they did not receive a pay raise for their additional responsibilities.  51 percent of working Americans felt that their additional responsibilities and workplace stress have had a negative effect on their health and well-being.
