Chairs, benches, and other seats are one the last things we might expect to result in an injury. When we sit down, we are looking for comfort and rest, not an opportunity to be hurt. In spite of this reasonable assumption, damaged and structurally unsound chairs result in thousands of hospital visits every year. For the precise reason that we are not thinking about a chair’s safety when we sit, these incidents can lead to far more serious injuries than we might imagine, as we tend to place all our weight in a seat in a very sudden motion.
A chair that collapses or fails to do its simple job in another way can lead to broken bones, concussions, and deep cuts, among other injuries. Oftentimes, these injuries occur in public places or on another’s property. In one recent example, a disabled young man suffered a concussion and spent a day in the emergency room after a chair at a well-known furniture store café allegedly collapsed underneath him.
In addition to the trauma and medical expense of injury, chair accidents can result in extensive lost time at work. A train conductor was awarded several thousand dollars in compensation last year after the chair he was sitting on in a break room collapsed, and the resulting injuries to his back prevented him from even sitting in the position his job required.
