An Alabama architecture firm is suspected of committing architectural malpractice in the building of the Huntsville city jail. The city of Huntsville is suing 2WR Holmes Wilkins Architects and Dawson Building Contractors Inc.. The suit was filed in the middle of construction of the jail, which took place from 2004 to 2009, and is still pending.
According to the city, when construction of the jail was finished in 2009 the contractors had gone nearly $50 million over budget. Construction of the jail was never completely finished because the city stopped the building after they found "numerous structural problems and defective and deficient work which caused safety concerns". The two firms blame each other for any structural and design defects in the construction of the city jail.
The city of Anniston is currently looking for an architecture firm to build a new judicial complex and is considering 2WR Holmes Wilkins Architects for the project. City officials say they will inquire into the pending lawsuit before making their decision.
