A study recently released by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reveals that many parents are uninformed about the potential link between newborn jaundice and brain injuries. When they are born, many infants' livers have not fully developed, resulting in a condition known as jaundice. Because this condition is not rare among newborns and usually does not have long-term consequences, many parents are assured not to worry unless symptoms persist or become worse.
According to the survey, over 70% of respondents had never heard of kernicterus, a condition caused by elevated levels of a chemical known as bilirubin. Because these levels are usually regulated by the liver, kernicterus can be a secondary condition resulting from jaundice.
