Teens and Farming Accidents
Every year, almost two million children and teens live and work on farms across the nation. For some of them, farming is a way of life that has been passed down for generations. For others, it is an invigorating summer job that affords the satisfaction participating hands-on in the production of vital commodities.
Despite the enthusiasm that many kids bring to farming tasks, it is a sad fact that nearly 22,000 of them suffer injuries related to their work annually, with nearly 100 of these cases being fatal. While rewarding, farming can be an incredibly dangerous line of work as well. The heavy machinery involved in many tasks is designed with adults in mind, and without proper training and supervision, children are especially prone to deadly mistakes in operation and safety measures.
Even in experienced hands, tractors and other industrial vehicles are prone to deadly rollovers. The federal government recommends that no one under the age of 16 be allowed behind the wheel of a tractor or ATV. Proper safety gear and clothing is essential as well. This includes hardhats, goggles, ear plugs, and well-fitting pants and shirts that cannot become stuck in machinery.
Another point to remember involves livestock. Farm animals may seem tame, but if they are confused or feeling threatened, they can inflict serious trauma to humans in the area. Teens should remember to always approach animals from the front so as not to startle them, and to avoid mothers with newborns.
