Burn Injury Basics
Burns are divided into different categories based on their severity and causes. Our Chicago burn injury attorneys can help victims of:
The severity of burns is determined by their size, location, and degree. The term "degree" refers to the type of damage done. Burn injuries are categorized into three degrees:
- First Degree: Damage is only done to the outermost layer of skin. The injured area may turn red and will probably be very painful. These injuries generally resolve on their own within days.
- Second Degree: The first two layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis, are damaged. Symptoms include intense pain, blisters, and discoloration. Healing may take a few weeks, and may leave mild scars. A second degree burn covering more than 15% of the body is considered severe.
- Third Degree: Damage extends past the skin to the muscle, ligaments, and fatty tissues below. The victim may actually feel no pain, due to nerve damage. Risks associated with these burns include shock, respiratory problems, infections, and disfiguring scars.
