Some Infamous Drug Recalls

• Fen-Phen: This weight loss drug was available under several different brand names for decades. The chemicals that compose it, fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine, have been linked to dangerous heart conditions, particularly in women. The drug was finally discontinued in 1997.
• “Black Box” Labels: In the late 1990’s, antidepressant drugs became the center of nationwide controversy as studies began to suggest a link between them and increased suicidal thoughts. These drugs have not been recalled, but the FDA has required pharmaceutical companies to place a “black box” label on their containers warning of these serious risks.
