Chicago Drunk Driving Lawyers
Operating a motor vehicle is never a completely safe task. This is especially true for large vehicles such as commercial trucks or buses. To reflect this, the law has stricter DUI/DWI guidelines for truck drivers than for operators of private vehicles. Unfortunately, despite these laws, accidents caused by drunk truck drivers continue to be a problem on our roads.
Chicago truck accident lawyers Friedman & Bonebrake, P.C. are committed to fighting this problem by holding drunk truck drivers responsible for the injuries they cause. To learn about the services we offer, contact our offices at 312-466-8200.
Trucks and Drunk Driving: What the Law Says
Most drivers can be arrested for drunk driving if they operate a vehicle while their blood alcohol contents (BAC) are above .08. Commercial drivers, on the other hand, are legally drunk when their BAC reaches .04. If they violate this law, they can be penalized with:
- Loss of commercial license (1 year for a first violation, permanently for a second violation)
- Up to 1 year in prison
- A fine up to $2,500
- Second violation: mandatory 5 days in prison or 240 hours of community service
- Third plus violation: mandatory 10 days in prison or 480 hours of community service
Help for Victims
It may be satisfying to see a negligent commercial driver pay a fine or go to prison. However, it does not address the difficulties that victims are often left with. People injured in truck accidents often have large medical bills, lost wages due to missed work, chronic pain, and emotional suffering. It is not fair for them to face these consequences after accidents they did not cause.
