Post-surgical Complications
Many people anticipating surgery intuitively feel that the surgery itself is the part to worry about. While there are certainly many risks associated with being operated on, there are also certain complications that can arise after the surgery is over. Post-surgery patients need to be carefully monitored and well cared for to reduce their chances of suffering a serious medical complication.
If a hospital’s failure to prevent post-surgical complications has caused you harm, contact Chicago surgical error lawyers Friedman & Bonebrake at 312-466-8200.
Types of Post-surgical Complication
Some of the more common types of post-surgical complication are:
- Infection. This is one of the most common risks associated with medical procedures. After surgery, a patient’s wounds need to be properly dressed and cared for under sterile conditions. Many patients will also be given a course of antibiotics to further reduce their risk.
- Adhesions. Adhesions form when scar tissue formed after a surgery causes two organs to become stuck together. They can lead to bowel obstructions, infertility, and chronic pain. In order to avoid them, surgeons must be very careful during surgery and use proper suturing.
- Ileus. This is a non-mechanical intestinal block, meaning that the muscles that move materials through the bowels become paralyzed. This can be a common side effect of abdominal surgery and usually clears up on its own within 72 hours. However, if tissue is mishandled or becomes infected during surgery, ileus can become a serious problem requiring medical attention.
