Inner Tube Accidents

Inner tubes and similar inflatable recreation devices provide thousands of Americans with fun and inexpensive entertainment every year. They can be used in dozens of different ways and for a wide range of situations, from drifting lazily down a river to a wild ride on a water park chute.

Unfortunately, despite their popularity - or perhaps because of it - inner tubes can also be a source of potentially deadly accidents. Hundreds of injuries related to inner tube recreation are reported every year, many of them fatal. These accidents are often the result of towing the tube or other object behind a vehicle, usually on water or snow but sometimes on dry land as well.

When the driver of the car or boat makes too sharp a turn, or if the tube hits an impediment, the consequences can be disastrous. The passenger or passengers, often children, are almost totally exposed and without any sort of protective gear. In one recent example, a nine-year-old girl was killed when she was thrown from an inner tube pulled through the snow by her father’s pick-up truck.

The danger does not stop at the possibility of being ejected from the tube. In another case, a young man was being towed on a tube behind a boat when a large wave struck the watercraft, causing the rope that the rider had wrapped around his arm to tighten and cut through, totally severing the limb.
